Arungarai Amman Temple
Temple and History
Goddess Arungarai Amman is the "Kula Deivam" for Venduvan Kootam, Pannai, and Panayan Kootam. Amman is also called as "Nalla Thai".The temple is situated on the banks of Amaravathi river in the Koodalur Village near Thirumangalam, Karur District, Tamil Nadu.
Arungarai Amman temple is not actually a big temple. Only a compound wall and a front mandapam alone is available. Inscriptions in one of the stones available in the temple premises indicate that the front mandapam and the compound walls were constructed during 1860.
Inside the compound is a dense forest and Amman resides beneath the earth in the north-west corner of the temple premises.
By going through the available records Amman would have incarnated 400 to 500 years the British rule.
This temple is also called as "Unjal Vanam" of the dense forest in that region.
Now in the temple premises around the compound wall wide pathway is built for devotees take valam or walk around. From the front Mandapam to reach the river steps are provided and besides the steps, Neerali Mandapam is constructed to do rituals, tonsuring of the head etc.
Inside the temple colorful statues of Natchi Muthaiyan, Natrayan, Ladaguru Thannasi, Karuppanasamy, Kanniyayi, Chinnamman, Periyamman are available along with the statue of Lord Ganapathy. Apart from these many beautiful statues of Horses, Dogs, Boys and Girls as an offering is built and maintained very nicely. Also, Mahamini is standing as Guard to Amman.
Outside the temple on the southern side, there is big hall is constructed for the devotees to stay in the night.
On the eastern side of the temple premises, there is a big mandapam with kitchen is built for preparing food for the devotees. Usually, every Tuesday "Annadhaanam" is served to all devotees. The devotees coming from far away places can have food and take rest till midnight to attend Pooja.
